Using minoxidil for men as a woman: is that allowed? Once a day and 5 things you need to know

Can you use minoxidil for men as a woman? Not according to the packaging and the leaflet: the 5% foam for men is intended for men and is not recommended for women. In practice it often happens, for example because the men's product is easier to find. If you do it anyway, use a lower frequency: 5% men's foam once a day instead of twice. This corresponds to the official dosage of 5% foam for women, namely 1 gram (half a cap) once a day.[1] The situation is different with lotion: the normal women's dosage is 2% lotion twice a day, and 5% lotion more often causes unwanted hair growth on the face in women.[4] In this blog you can read what the difference is, how to approach it safely and when it is better not to begins.

Can you use minoxidil for men as a woman?

Officially not. The Dutch leaflet for Regaine 5% foam for men literally says that the foam is not intended for women.[2] The same applies the other way around: the product information of the 5% foam for women mentions use by men as a contraindication.[1] A manufacturer registers a product for a specific group with a certain dosage, and the packaging is tailored to this.

That does not mean that the active substance is for women is different. Minoxidil is also used in women against hereditary hair loss, but with its own usage advice. The main difference is not in the substance, but in how often and how much you apply. If you, as a woman, use the men's foam with the men's dosage (twice a day), you will get twice as much minoxidil on your scalp as the women's dosage prescribes.

What is the difference between 5% foam for men and for women?

With Regaine, the difference is easy to check, because the official product information for both foams is public. The active ingredient, the strength and even the list of excipients are the same: anhydrous ethanol, purified water, butylated hydroxytoluene, lactic acid, citric acid, glycerol, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, polysorbate 60 and propellant.[1][2] The difference is in the dosage and the target group.

How do you use 5% men's foam as a woman?

If you do choose it, follow the women's dosage and not that of the men's packaging. This gives you the same amount as the official women's foam:[1]

  1. Take 1 gram of foam, about half a cap.
  2. Apply it once a day, on a dry scalp, spread over the thinner areas.
  3. Massage it gently with your fingertips and leave it withdraw.
  4. Then wash your hands well, so that no foam gets on your face or other skin. Extra hair growth in places where you do not apply, such as your face, is a known side effect.[5]
  5. Do not use more or more often. According to the product information, more foam does not give better results.

Expect patience. With women's foam it takes 12 to 24 weeks before you can expect growth, and in the first weeks you may temporarily lose more hair (usually between weeks 2 and 6).[1] If the extra loss lasts longer than 2 weeks, or if you see no improvement after 24 weeks, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Here you have to be more careful. For lotion, the normal women's dosage is 2% lotion, 1 ml twice a day.[3] A 5% lotion for women is not official advice in the Netherlands. In a study with 381 women, 5% lotion worked slightly better than 2%, but it also caused itching, irritation and unwanted hair growth more often, for example on the face.[4] If you prefer no lotion, then 5% foam once a day is an official alternative: in a 52-week study it worked at least as well as 2% lotion twice a day. day.[1]

When should you not start?

Whether you use the men's or women's product, the warnings are the same. According to the product information of the women's foam, you should not use it:[1]

  • during pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding (minoxidil is present in breast milk);
  • with high blood pressure, treated or untreated;
  • with heart disease or cardiac arrhythmia without first consulting your doctor;
  • if you are under 18 years;
  • on an irritated, burned or inflamed scalp.

Checklist before you use woman starts taking minoxidil: not pregnant or breastfeeding, no heart or blood pressure problems, 18 years or older, read the package leaflet and if in doubt ask the pharmacist

Stop immediately and contact your doctor if you experience chest pain, a fast heartbeat, dizziness or fainting, sudden weight gain or swollen hands or feet.[1] If your hair falls out suddenly, in spots or for no apparent reason, see your doctor first. This may indicate, for example, a thyroid problem, iron deficiency or alopecia areata, and minoxidil is not the solution for this. Always read the leaflet of the product you use.

Why do women choose the men's product?

Mostly for practical reasons: the men's product is more often found in stores, there are more variants and a single bottle seems cheaper. In practice, the price difference is not too bad. Once a day, a bottle of men's foam lasts about twice as long as the men's dose, but this also applies to women's foam. At Minodeals, 1 bottle of Kirkland men's foam costs €34.99 and 1 bottle of Kirkland women's foam costs €39.99, good for about 2 months if used once a day (prices November 2026).

Our advice: as a woman, preferably choose the product intended for women. Then the instructions on the packaging correspond to what you do and you do not have to do the calculations yourself. If you are in doubt between brands, read our blog about Regaine foam 5% for women.
