Foligain minoxidil is available in five variants at Minodeals: a 5% lotion for men, a 5% lotion for sensitive skin, a 5% foam for men and for women a 2% lotion and a 2% foam. The active substance in all variants is minoxidil; the difference is in the strength, the form (lotion or foam) and the excipients. In short: if you suffer from itching or burning from regular minoxidil, choose the lotion for sensitive skin or the foam. If you don't want drips and quickly dry hair, choose the foam. If you are a woman, start with a 2% variety and talk to your pharmacist if you are considering a stronger formula. Below you can read for each variant who it is intended for, what it costs per month and what you can expect.

What exactly is Foligain minoxidil?
Foligain is an American brand for hair care and hair growth. Foligain's minoxidil products contain minoxidil, the same active ingredient as in well-known brands such as Regaine and Kirkland. The American label of the Foligain lotion 5% states 5% minoxidil (50 mg per ml) with alcohol, propylene glycol and purified water as excipients.[1]
Minoxidil reduces hair loss and can cause new hair growth in some people. According to Apotheek.nl, the effect is greatest in men under forty with limited hair loss.[2] It is not a miracle cure: it only works as long as you continue to use it.
In addition to minoxidil, Foligain also sells a DHT Blocker Serum with Trichogen and hair growth capsules. Please note: this does not contain minoxidil. They are cosmetic products and supplements, and they are excluded from this comparison.
Which Foligain variants are there and what do they cost?
The table shows the five minoxidil variants that Minodeals sells, with the price of a 3-month package and the price per month.
| Variant | Strength | Shape | Price 3 months | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lotion for men | 5% | Lotion with pipette | €64,99 | approx. €21.66 |
| Lotion sensitive skin | 5% | Lotion, less alcohol | €64,99 | approx. €21.66 |
| Foam for men | 5% | Foam | €74,99 | approx. €25.00 |
| Lotion for women | 2% | Lotion with pipette | €64,99 | approx. €21.66 |
| Foam for women | 2% | Foam | €74,99 | approx. €25.00 |
Those who want to wait longer pay less per month: the 5% and 2% lotions are also available as a 6-month package for €99.99, or approximately €16.67 per month (while supplies last).

What is the difference between the regular lotion and the lotion for sensitive skin?
Both lotions contain 5% minoxidil. The difference is in the basics. The lotion for sensitive skin is intended for people who are sensitive to irritation from alcohol-containing products.
That is not a detail. According to Apotheek.nl, itching, dry skin, rash or a burning sensation are usually caused by the alcohol in the lotion.[2] In addition, propylene glycol, an excipient in many minoxidil lotions, is mentioned in the professional literature as the substance most often responsible for allergic contact dermatitis with minoxidil.[3]
Did you suffer from red, itchy or flaky skin with a regular lotion? scalp? Then the variant for sensitive skin is a logical next step. If the irritation persists, or you develop a rash or swelling, stop and consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Foligain foam or lotion: which suits you?
The active ingredient is the same, so the choice is mainly about convenience and your scalp. The foam melts on your scalp, does not run out and dries quickly. This is nice if you have short hair or have little time in the morning. Minoxidil foam was also developed as a form without propylene glycol, precisely to reduce irritation.[3] Always check the ingredients list for your packaging.
Apply the lotion with a pipette. This allows you to dose precisely and the liquid can easily reach the scalp between longer hair. The lotion is also a bit cheaper per month. You can read more about the differences in our article minoxidil foam or lotion.

Which Foligain do you choose as a woman?
For women there are two variants with 2% minoxidil: a lotion and a foam. The lotion is odorless, dries quickly and is applied twice a day. The foam is useful if you don't want liquid in your hair.
A stronger 5% formula is more likely to cause unwanted hair growth in other places, such as the face, for women. Apotheek.nl mentions hair growth on arms, legs or face as a possible side effect.[2] If you are considering 5%, consult your pharmacist or doctor first. In minoxidil 2% or 5% for women you can read the considerations in a row.
Important: hair loss in women often has a cause other than hereditary baldness, such as a thyroid problem, iron deficiency, menopause or a period of stress. In case of sudden, patchy or rapidly increasing hair loss, you should first visit your doctor. Minoxidil does not solve such causes.

How do you use Foligain minoxidil?
The Foligain label for the lotion 5% says: Apply 1 ml directly to the scalp with the pipette twice a day, where the hair is thinning. Applying more product or more often does not give better results.[1] Always follow the instructions on your packaging for the foam and the 2% variants.

- Make sure the hair and scalp are completely dry and do not use the product immediately after showering.[2]
- Apply it to the scalp itself, not to the hair.
- Wash your hands well afterwards, or use gloves.[2]
- Forgot? Apply it again, but do not take double the amount.
- If you get the product in your eyes, mouth or nose, rinse immediately with water.
When will you see results with Foligain?
Minoxidil requires patience. Approximately the same timeline applies to all variants, because the active substance is the same. Results vary per person.
Sometimes temporary increased hair loss. This usually stops on its own after 2 to 6 weeks.[2]
According to the Foligain label, the first results may be visible after 2 months with twice daily use.[1]
The time when most people notice an effect.[2]
No new hair growth yet? Then, according to Apotheek.nl, further use is pointless.[2]
Maximum effect. If you stop, the new growth will disappear again within about 3 to 4 months.[2]
When should you not use Foligain?
Do not use minoxidil, or only after consultation with your doctor or pharmacist, in these situations:[1][2]
- You are pregnant or want to become pregnant.
- You have a heart or vascular condition or problems with your blood pressure.
- You are younger than 18 years.
- Your hair loss is sudden or patchy, or you do not know where it comes from.
- Your scalp is red, inflamed, or damaged.
Stop immediately and contact a doctor if you experience chest pain, palpitations, dizziness or fainting, unexplained weight gain, or swollen hands or feet.[1]
Frequently asked questions
Is Foligain the same as Regaine?
Both brands use minoxidil as the active ingredient, in similar strengths. The differences are in the excipients, the shape, the packaging and the price. At Minodeals, Foligain is cheaper per month than Regaine.
Which Foligain is best for a sensitive scalp?
Choose the Foligain lotion 5% for sensitive skin, or try the foam. Irritation from minoxidil lotions is often due to alcohol or propylene glycol. If the irritation persists, stop and ask your pharmacist for advice.
Can I use Foligain on my beard?
The product information mentions that the 5% variants are also suitable for the beard. Use the same caution as on the scalp and watch for facial skin irritation.
Does the Foligain DHT Blocker Serum work as well as minoxidil?
No, you can't compare that. The serum does not contain minoxidil and is a cosmetic product that cares for the scalp. Minoxidil is a drug with proven effectiveness in slowing down hereditary hair loss.
What happens if I stop taking Foligain?
Stopping is possible without any after-effects, but the new hair growth will disappear again. After about 3 to 4 months you will be back to your pre-treatment level.
